The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort
The iconic "Pink Palace of the Pacific" right on its own private beach with a lavish pool complex spa and luaus the Royal Hawaiian a Luxury Collection Resort Waikiki is a Honolulu landmark. Built in 1927 on a prime stretch of Waikiki Beach where Queen Ka'ahumanu had her summer palace Royal Hawaiian has 528 luxury rooms and suites divided between the flamingo-pink Spanish-Moorish original building bordered by a lush garden with a majestic banyan tree and a newer 17-story Royal Beach Tower. Rooms are decorated in a tropical theme and include plush beds mini-fridges iPod docking stations and flat-panel TVs with premium cable. Rooms have views of the garden royal grove or ocean and some rooms have lanais. Wi-Fi is available for a charge. The hotel has a multi-pool complex with 70-foot water slide hot tubs weekly luaus luxury day spa lei-making classes and a beachfront restaurant and famous bar where the Mai Tai was said to have been invented. Parking is included in the resort fee. The Royal Hawaiian is nestled right on a private stretch of Waikiki Beach next to the Royal Hawaiian Center for indoor shopping and across the street from the International Market Place. Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is eight miles southeast.

“We stayed here for one night at the end of our trip in a historic king ocean view. The hotel is beautiful and I loved the room. The historic feel was great and it was nice to see the ocean. One of my bags broke upon arrival and a woman at the bell desk was very kind and ran and got me some ABC bags. The bellman that brought my bags to the room was so wonderful.
Check in- I had checked in through the app the day before and requested an early check in which they accommodated and I was very grateful. The waterproof wrist bands as room keys are convenient for the beach. The activities calendar was nice to have.
Rooms- I really enjoyed the historic wing. The rooms were clean and the detail on the doors was gorgeous. My only complaint is that the walls are paper thin and you can hear the people next door but luckily that wasn't too much of an issue and overall it felt secluded.
Check out- We checked out at noon and reserved the refreshment room to use before our flight. This was a great convenience despite the group before us staying beyond their alloted time. It was nice to be able to shower before heading to the airport. It didn't seem super clean and you had to go to the shower area for paper towels in the toilet area but I could definitely live with those things to be able to have the this convenience before we left.
Overall thoughts- I truly did like staying here because of how gorgeous the hotel was and how it felt secluded despite being near everything in Waikiki. I didn't give it 5 stars because I'm just not sure it is worth the price. The base room cost wasn't bad but once you add all the taxes and resort charges it ended up being quite a bit more. I stayed in three different hotels in Waikiki and if you don't care about the expense this one is great. I'm just not entirely convinced it was worth the extra cost. You also still had to rent beach chairs and umbrellas which I would have thought would have been included in a luxury resort fee. I'm definitely glad I at least visited once.”

“We stayed in a Mailani Tower high floor ocean front balcony room.
The view was spectacular! If you plan to stay in Waikiki, the hotels are very expensive and you should lower your expectations for what to expect for your money. With that in-mind, we were still disappointed with our experience at The Royal Hawaiian. The hotel is a bit run-down, but that I can forgive since this is a sandy beach venue. I'm always friendly to all, but many people here seem angry and rude.
Stock-up at a grocery store if you stay here. Room service is a standard expectation from hotels that claim to be 5* properties, but the Royal Hawaiian has none. So don't expect any nice dinners on your expensive balcony. Not many other food options and the coffee bar opens too late and has long lines. (-1*)
We expect room darkening curtains from any hotel room, but the Royal Hawaiian does not have curtains or even binds. The windows have fixed slat louvered panels that don't even come close to blocking the light. Also, a very odd design choice for the wall-to-wall ocean view to be 40% blocked by sliding louvered panels. (-1*)
I called the day before arrival to request early check-in, and was encouraged, but understood there were no guarantees. But on arrival, the front desk clerk chose to lecture me on when check-in time is, as if that point was somehow lost in the early check-in request. He said they he would call me when the room was ready. But no call. I found myself waiting in line again, showing ID again, and not-checking-in until well after check-in time. In the 3 hours that we were waiting for the call, I did notice that the suitcases from other waiting guest grew to a mountain, and none but ours were left by the time we received our keys. (-1*)
I can't understand why any guest should ever need to request remote for the TV and a do-not-disturb placard for the door. Should be standard equipment in all rooms.
We also stayed at a sister property 2 hotels down the beach and had the opposite experience. Strange contrast.”
